Acupuncture
Acupuncture
Acupuncture originated in China more than 2500 years ago but gained attention in the
medicine, the body has over 2000 acupuncture points connected via pathways, or meridians.
Each of the 14 meridians relate to a different organ or organ system. Qi must flow through
the body in these meridians without interruption or blockage. A disturbance in the flow of
Qi can result in illness, pain, or a general lack of health. Stimulation of specific points
along the meridians, according to Chinese theory, can correct the flow of Qi to restore or
optimize health or block pain. Acupuncture corrects these imbalances when applied at
acupuncture points and improves the flow of Qi.
Acupuncture is performed with metallic, solid, and hair-thin needles. Patients report
different feelings associated with acupuncture, but most feel minimal pain as the needle is
inserted. Acupuncture makes some people report feeling energized by the treatment, while
others say they feel relaxed.
Many Americans seek acupuncture treatment for relief of chronic pain, such as arthritis or
low back pain. Acupuncture, however, has expanded uses in other parts of the world. The
World Health Organization (WHO) lists conditions that may benefit from acupuncture.
These conditions include the following:
Chiropractic and acupuncture work hand in hand in that chiropractic adjustments restore
proper alignment to relieve nerve flow impingement, while acupuncture enhanced the flow of
Qi through meridians to correct and rebalance. Together chiropractic care and acupuncture
are an excellent healing choice and without the risks of side-effects.
